If I don't leave Facebook (and other social media) then I'll be cutting it out a lot. I have to do it.

Step one: Check through all the friends and followers on my personal profile.

There have been some 5000+ there since I first started in 2007. And the discovery itself was horrifying.

Facebook has this thing where it won't let you see your friends' posts, unless you talk to them all the time. Then they will distract and grab your attention, flooding your senses with all sorts of utter bullshit and crap. Useless plastic crap.

Well, I got caught. Too long. And the fallout of that caught my attention when I went into my friends and followers lists.

It was great, looking through it, checking on faces I'd never seen in ages. Then I came across one I'd not spoken to in a long time.

Excitedly, I clicked on the profile to check the feed. Hmmm not too many posts there. Just messages from friends on the wall to wish a happy birthday. Then I saw it.

A birthday message.

"Happy birthday to you, wherever you are and whatever you're doing."

"Happy birthday. I'll have a beer for you and hope you're enjoying one up there too."

"Happy birthday. It's been two years, and we still miss you."

Shit!

A friend had died, and I didn't know about it. It wasn't the first either since I discovered a few months ago my best schoolfriend's mother had passed away too. That cut deep. Today's cut deeper, not because that friend had been any closer, but because I realised -- one day that could be me.

All of these people I *love* entertaining with my Dad Joke posts. I'd just disappear, and they wouldn't even notice. A forgotten blip on the radar.

Can you imagine the same happening to you?

I continued through the list. There was another old face. Damn! She had died too. And another, and the list continued. There have been two dozen people who died, and I hadn't noticed. Partly my fault, but also influenced by a pathetic algorithm fostered by a weedy "entrepreneurial" creature who owns the social media company. How do others feel when they go checking up on friends they have missed over the months?

Obviously, it's not Facebook's fault that my friends had died. Not entirely their fault I hadn't heard... but I do blame them for their insatiable greed behind their algorithm that treats its users the way a sociopathic kid tortures small animals. It is despicable.

I'm not naive to the fact that it's only free to users to "be the product" for businesses who pay Facebook (and other social media) for advertising. It's how they remain "free to use". But we all know, there's no such thing as free in the world. It's all an illusion.

So that's another reason added to the growing list of reasons for my deepening dislike and distrust for social media.

At least the newspaper, radio, or televison tells us when people pass.

But not the heartless money-grubbing bastards like Zuckerberg. One day, he will pass too. You can bet we'll all hear about that!
Chris Johnson - Mentalist and Authorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09263930589108679744noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-520041849273224891.post-60013741589605404162023-11-12T16:01:00.002+10:002023-11-12T16:01:52.397+10:00Ask Me Anything - 13th December 2023

Hey, everyone! Thanks for coming to chat with me!

I'm Chris Johnson, and I'm super excited to be here answering your questions today! I write novels and novellas in speculative fiction -- especially adventure laced with light science fiction and/or supernatural themes! My books range from weird fiction (like what you might find in Twilight Zone, Amazing Stories, etc), tales of psychic detectives and time travellers who end up in a big heap of trouble. In fact, the latest release is The Paradox of Buck Nowlan, the second in the ChronoSpace series -- it was great fun to write. The third is on its way.

I love adventure and action movies, especially the kind by Stephen Spielberg in the 1980s, and a host of other weird and wonderful things. And I'm often prone to telling some terrible Dad jokes to prove my quirkiness.

I'm Australian, born and bred, and live in Brisbane, Queensland near a brilliant lake around which I often walk. Besides writing, I'm also a mentalist and magician; that explains the Dad jokes.

You can find my books at larrikinbooks.com, and pretty soon there'll be more of me on YouTube when I find the time for it. Every month, I send out a newsletter or two (or three) to my subscribers by email, keeping them up with special deals on my writing... even competitions.

You can find me on social media at Facebook and BookBub.

Chris Johnson - Mentalist and Authorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09263930589108679744noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-520041849273224891.post-32849828452883924332023-10-31T18:00:00.012+10:002023-11-12T09:25:26.233+10:00Grantley's Last Laugh -- a little light Halloween reading for you

[Scene: A dimly lit room adorned with antique furniture.
The word itself conjures up images full of witches cackling over bubbling cauldrons as they incant their spells, throwing odd ingredients into the mix. Pumpkins carved into jagged glowing mouths and eyes spring to mind, as do troops of children dressed in sheets, robes, and an assortment of other apparel to be their favourite scary creature or hero.

Having grown up in Australia in the 1970s and 1980s, I never experienced any of this. Halloween was regarded as “something those Yanks do in America, not here”, which is a misnomer, of course.

Halloween, originally known as 'Samhain,' marked the end of the harvest season in Celtic lands like Ireland and parts of Britain. The Celts believed that on October 31st, the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, giving rise to bonfires, feasts, and costumes made from animal heads and skins. Over time, it evolved into the Halloween we know today, with influences from various cultures.

As Christianity spread across Europe, the Catholic Church sought to Christianise existing pagan celebrations. In the 7th century, Pope Boniface IV established All Saints' Day (also known as All Hallows' Day) on November 1st to honour saints and martyrs. The evening before, known as All Hallows' Eve, eventually became Halloween.

Eventually, it was introduced through migration to America where it flourished to such a level, it’s any wonder people think it’s “something the Americans cooked up”.

Back to Australia now, I remember mention of it in 1978 when my second grade teacher, Mrs Childs, who came from the USA, showed us all how to make a Jack O Lantern. We might have dressed up in fancy-dress costumes for a school dance for the occasion too, but that was the only time at school. It never caught on because it was “an American thing”.

Fast-forward to 1999, when I was living in Perth. On the 31st October, I was caught off-guard by the knock-knock on the door by Trick-or-Treaters. Although I had no lollies for the kids, I was working as a magician – so I “treated” them with my “tricks”. We soon had the same kids coming back with their friends, and I found myself doing an impromptu show for many others throughout the night.

A year later, I did the same thing just a little differently. You see, I had a lot of work as a walk-around wizard in corporate and private functions throughout the year. Perth was great for that. So on Halloween of 2000, I decided to join the other trick-or-treaters in character. Dressed in my black cloak, armed with my knowledge of sleight-of-hand and a bunch of business cards, I joined the costumed zombies, ghouls, ghosts, and a Pokémon on the streets, moving house to house.

Chris Johnson as "The Seer"

At each house, silver balls blossomed into existence between my fingers before amazed eyes. People gasped when I produced coins from their noses and lit cigarettes from their pockets. It was an amazing night, bringing magic to people, sharing the wonder and a smile or two with each of them. Then something bigger happened.

Just as I was plucking a ribbon from someone’s fingertips, someone cried, “Hey! Look at the cats!”

I turned in time to see that my Siamese and Burmese cats sitting at my feet, watching in rapt attention. Apparently, they had been following me to each house, watching from the bushes or nearby. It proved the spectacle for the residents of three blocks to see the goth wizard and his familiars spreading magic and smiles on the night of magical happenings.

In the end, what began as a foreign tradition to me became a night of magic and connection. The streets of Seville Grove in Perth, Western Australia, adorned with ghosts and goblins, witnessed a wizard and his faithful feline companions spreading wonder and smiles. A night of shared enchantment, it proved to me that magic isn’t just found in spells and sleight-of-hand, but in the simple act of bringing joy to others wherever you are in the world.

Speaking of Tricks and Treats, check out one of my stories -- The Trick -- below.

I was abruptly torn from the embrace of slumber, but what greeted my awakened senses was far from familiar. An eerie sensation tingled through the air, whispering that something was amiss.

In the pitch-black abyss, devoid of any recognisable feature, I felt disoriented, as if I had been transported to a realm beyond my own. It was then that the sound of rain assaulting an unknown surface invaded my ears, a fierce percussion against what surely couldn't be my home's garden.

A thunderous crack cleaved the air, searing its brilliant light into the depths of my mind, revealing three ethereal figures. They materialised before me with an uncanny grace, their forms exuding both danger and ethereal beauty. Their alluring curves possessed an otherworldly allure, akin to the graceful movements of a mesmerising dancer. And as my eyes adjusted to the gloom, the realisation dawned upon me, dispelling any lingering thoughts of this being a mere dream. The enigmatic presence before me was undeniably real.

As the thunderous echoes faded, the silhouette of the three feminine figures became more defined. Their features, now bathed in the afterglow of lightning, revealed an otherworldly allure that sent a shiver down my spine. It was then that they spoke, their voices carrying a hypnotic quality tinted with a thick Hungarian accent.

The first of the trio stepped forward, her presence exuding a regal air. Her voice, like velvet laced with the whispers of the night, introduced her as Helga. Her eyes, gleaming like polished obsidian, held a hunger that hinted at forbidden desires. She spoke with a sultry tone, her words weaving a seductive spell.

Next, another figure emerged from the darkness, her ethereal form moving with an elegant fluidity. Introducing herself as Ingrid, her voice possessed a haunting quality, like a ghostly wind through ancient ruins. Her eyes, a mesmerising shade of amethyst, seemed to peer into the depths of my soul, beckoning me to surrender to the mysteries she held.

And finally, the third vampiric woman stepped forward, her presence a captivating blend of allure and danger. Rosa, as she called herself, had a voice that dripped with mischief, her words tinged with a playful charm. Her eyes, a piercing emerald green, sparkled with an enigmatic sparkle that mirrored the flickering light of distant stars.

As the realisation sank in, I found myself before Helga, Ingrid, and Rosa, the embodiment of temptation and darkness. Their identities were clear, and I was drawn into their alluring embrace, knowing that my life would never be the same again.

Helga, her voice laced with a seductive charm, leaned forward, her eyes sparkling in the dim light. "Good evening, Chris Johnson," she purred, her words dripping with allure. "We are absolutely delighted to have you here tonight, surrounded by the enchanting glow of candlelight. Your book, 'While He Was Sleeping,' has certainly piqued our interest, much like the ethereal light that glistens off our elegant fangs. Pray, tell us, what inspired you to create such an intoxicating and suspenseful supernatural thriller?"

I felt a subtle shiver travel down my spine as Ingrid, with playful grace, traced a delicate finger along the line of my jaw. Her eyes locked onto mine, a mischievous glint in her gaze. "Ah, secrets and mysteries," she murmured, her words carrying an air of enchantment. "They tantalise us, much like the captivating charm of the night itself. Chris, we cannot help but be intrigued by your character Maerie. Can you offer us a glimpse into her enigmatic nature and the role she plays in the seductive dance of this story?"

Caught in the intoxicating spell woven by the three enchantresses, I leaned in, anticipation tinging my voice. "Maerie," I began, my words coming forth like whispers in the twilight, "is a creature of mystery, much like the flickering dance of candlelight upon your graceful fangs. She intertwines herself with the narrative, an enigma that both enthralls and unnerves. As the story unfurls, her true nature gradually emerges, casting a haunting shadow over the lives of Norman, Ella, and Robin. She becomes a catalyst for a battle between darkness and loyalty, adding a layer of sensuality and enigma to the tale."

Rosa, her voice a velvety whisper, leaned closer, her eyes glinting with curiosity, her breath cold yet warming on my cheek. "Mmm, a battle between darkness and loyalty," she breathed, her words enveloped in a cloud of allure. "Boundaries blur, passions ignite. Chris, as Robin and Ella embark on their harrowing journey, can you paint a picture of the temptations they encounter? The pleasures and dangers that intertwine as they venture into the depths of Norman's secrets?"

The room seemed to hold its breath as I pondered Rosa's question. The candlelight flickered, casting ethereal patterns on the table. "Ah, the temptations that lie in wait," I responded, my voice laced with both excitement and caution, "reminiscent of the seductive allure of moonlight on an uncharted path. Robin and Ella succumb to psychological and supernatural challenges, drawn further into the enigmatic tapestry of their friend's secrets. It's a journey that tests their very souls, entices them with the thrill of the unknown, and explores the depths of their resilience."

Helga leaned back in her chair, a sultry smile playing upon her lips, as her legs crossed revealing her form through the thin fabric of her dress. "Your words weave an enchanting spell, Chris," she purred, her voice like velvet against the night. "Now, let us explore the atmospheric presence that lingers within the pages of 'While He Was Sleeping.'" The gentle candlelight casts shadows and illuminated their sharp yet elegant fangs. "How did you craft such a tantalisingly chilling and suspenseful tone, leaving readers yearning for more?"

I took a moment to gather my thoughts, the flickering candlelight reflecting in my eyes. "Ah, the atmosphere," I mused, my words drifting through the air like a whispered incantation. "Like the interplay of shadows and candlelight, I aimed to create a captivating tone that immersed readers in the heart of the story. Through intricate descriptions that engaged the senses, carefully orchestrated pacing, and an embrace of the unknown, I sought to leave readers with a subtle shiver, an insatiable desire to uncover the concealed secrets hidden within the pages."

Ingrid leaned forward, her voice dripping with intrigue. "Mmm, a subtle shiver," she whispered, her words a siren's song as I indeed shuddered. "A sensation we know all too well. Chris, indulge us in a playful tease. If we were to suggest savouring the essence of your work, akin to the candlelight flickering off our fangs, how would you react? Would you feel a thrill of excitement or a sense of anticipation?"

I couldn't help but smile as my gaze met theirs in a moment of shared understanding. "Ah, the dance of playful teasing," I chuckled softly, the sound mingling with the flickering candlelight. "While the suggestion certainly adds a touch of intrigue, I must confess that I find the excitement of storytelling to be my preferred elixir. I prefer my blood left flowing within my veins, fuelling my imagination and creativity."

Rosa's voice lowered, a velvet whisper in the air. "Such creativity is an intoxicating elixir in itself, Chris," she murmured, her words lingering in the space between them. "We appreciate your response, leaving a hint of mystery in the air. Now, as this bewitching interview draws to a close, what do you hope readers will take away from 'While He Was Sleeping'?"

With a sense of both completion and anticipation, I answered, listening to my words echoing in the candlelit chamber. "I hope readers become ensnared by the hypnotic dance within the pages," he confessed, his voice a gentle breeze in the night. "Like the flickering of candlelight upon their eager eyes, I want them to immerse themselves in the mysteries, feel the pulse of suspense, and experience the thrill of unravelling secrets. Ultimately, I hope they emerge from the story with a renewed sense of wonder, their imaginations ignited, and an insatiable appetite for the mysteries that reside within the realms of their own dreams."

Helga's sultry smile deepened, her eyes gleaming with a mix of admiration and intrigue. "Thank you, Chris Johnson, for gracing us with your presence on this bewitching night," she said, her voice a melodic caress. "May your words continue to enchant and beguile readers, guiding them through the seductive realms of your storytelling. Until we meet again, dear author."

I bowed my head respectfully, my heart filled with a sense of both satisfaction and a guilty longing. "Thank you for this enchanting interview," I replied, my voice carrying a touch of wistfulness. "May I please return to my own bedroom and my family?"

With that, a wave of darkness enveloped my senses, pulling me into the abyss of unconsciousness. Strange and elusive dreams danced through the realms of my mind, blurring the line between reality and fantasy. And when the morning light finally caressed my weary face, I awakened with a start, gasping for breath.

A peculiar sensation lingered, a phantom touch upon my throat that whispered of an intimate encounter with the unknown. I traced my fingers along the skin, searching for answers, but found nothing more than an inexplicable ache, as if something had grazed the surface, leaving behind an enigmatic mark.

Though I never knew her beyond a few fleeting moments, her impact on me was profound. This story is dedicated to her, an enigmatic figure who unknowingly became the catalyst for a tale of connection and empathy.

Hannah remains a mystery to me. I can only speculate about the way she carries herself, unaware of the furtive glances she may attract while going about her grocery shopping. The details of her appearance I never knew, save for the echo of her voice and the emotions that coloured it on that October afternoon in 2002.

At the time, I had recently started a new clerical job at a mortgage broker company in Perth. As I sat in my office, my phone rang, disrupting the monotony of my workday. Curiosity piqued, I cautiously answered the unfamiliar number, hoping it wasn't an unwelcome call from a debt collector.

To my surprise, a honey-sweet, melodious voice filled my ear—a voice tinged with shock and fear. Hannah had dialled my number by mistake, seeking solace and guidance after an accident. At that moment, I became the unexpected recipient of her distress, someone she desperately needed to confide in.

Realising she had reached the wrong person, I could have easily ended the call. But something in her voice spoke to me—an unspoken plea for a compassionate ear. Moved by her vulnerability, I decided to lend her my listening ear, offering a momentary respite from her ordeal. We conversed as she recounted the accident and the ensuing shock; I provided comfort until help arrived.

After that momentary connection, Hannah and I never spoke again. Months passed, and just as I had begun to let go of the memory, my phone chimed with a message on Christmas Day. It was from Hannah—a heartfelt note expressing gratitude for my presence during her time of need, a reminder of the impact a brief encounter can have.

On New Year's Eve of that same year, I found myself captivated by the allure of the midnight hour. Inspired by Hannah's mysterious call and the emotional weight it carried, I began crafting "Call Me," the opening scene of a story that would take shape over several years. Although it took me until 2008 to complete, this tale remained a personal favourite, reminding me of a valuable lesson.

Through my encounter with Hannah, I learned a profound truth: People may not always remember our names, but they will forever recall how we made them feel. The impact we have on others, even in fleeting moments, can leave an indelible mark.

To discover the full narrative of Hannah's story and explore the collection of "Twelve Strokes of Midnight," I invite you to read the complete tale. Joining us today is the protagonist himself, Tony "Buck" Nowlan. We'll delve into the intricacies of the book, Tony's journey, and a surprising revelation from Chris Johnson.

Interviewer: Tony, it's a pleasure to have you here. Can you give us a glimpse into your extraordinary adventure aboard the RMS Titanic?

Tony: Thank you for having me. Well, my life took an unexpected turn when I found myself on the Titanic, just moments before its tragic encounter with the iceberg. As a time traveller equipped with the ChronoSpace device, I was feeling guilty about breaking a promise to my wife, Erin, who was pregnant. You see, she told me not to time travel and leave her alone during the pregnancy. The weight of my choices and the urgency to fulfil those promises pushed me to race against time itself.

Interviewer: It sounds like an incredible journey, and I hope you won't do that to your poor wife again! Now, Chris, as the mastermind behind this gripping tale, what inspired you to write "The Paradox of Buck Nowlan"?

Chris: Thank you, it's great to be here. The concept of time travel has always fascinated me. That's how I came to write the first book in the series, "Bootstrap's Journey". I wanted to explore the web of choices and the consequences that come from messing in time. I aimed to create a suspenseful narrative that raises thought-provoking questions about fate and the power of one individual's actions. Tony's story provided the perfect canvas for me to delve into these themes.

Interviewer: Absolutely intriguing. There's an air of familiarity between us, and our encounters are both puzzling and intense. I couldn't help but feel that he played a significant role in my life and my journey, and his connection to the story became more apparent as time went on.

Interviewer: Fascinating. At that time, my closest supporters were my friends, who often found themselves as characters within my stories. Joseph, one of my friends, once asked me a question that has lingered in my mind ever since: "Where do you find all your ideas?"

As a sixteen-year-old, I shrugged in response to Joseph's inquiry. Ideas seemed to manifest themselves effortlessly, appearing from all corners of my mind. Even now, at the age of fifty-something, inspiration still strikes unexpectedly. The key is to be prepared to capture them.

Ideas possess an enigmatic nature. If you actively search for them, they may seem elusive, requiring effort to coax them forward. Yet, when you least expect it—perhaps while driving a car—those cunning ideas pounce upon you, seemingly out of thin air, leaving you with no immediate means to capture them.

These days, I have become more adept at readiness. I keep a journal or notebook within reach of my bedside, ensuring that if an idea materialises within a dream, I can swiftly awaken and jot it down. However, this practice comes with its challenges. Occasionally, I unintentionally disturb my wife from her slumber, which inevitably leads to morning grumpiness. Furthermore, deciphering my own early-morning handwriting can prove quite the puzzle.

Another inconvenient time for ideas to emerge is when I am behind the wheel. It frustrates me, for I cannot immediately record them without pausing my journey and risking lateness. However, I have devised a sly strategy. Unbeknownst to those sneaky ideas, I have a voice-recording app called "Voice Memo" tucked away in the console beside the driver's seat. With a simple touch of my fingerprint scanner, I can activate the app, hit the start button, and seamlessly speak my ideas aloud, all while keeping my eyes focused on the road ahead.

Although the voice-recording method has proven effective, it presents one significant challenge. It necessitates finding time later to listen to my recordings—an activity that requires more patience than my ability to rapidly consume written text. What transpires when I eventually revisit these recordings and transcribe them, incorporating additional notes and adjustments?

The true challenge lies in transforming those initial sparks of inspiration into a cohesive narrative spanning at least 40,000 words, with my current goal often reaching 75,000 words. In my teenage years, I would write what I considered a chapter—a mere ten typed pages—aiming for a total of seventeen to twenty chapters.

When ideas prove elusive, and I seek to exercise my writing muscles by typing 1000-2000 words in the morning's freshness, I turn to mind-mapping. This technique involves free association of words and thoughts, allowing my mind to wander and interconnect various concepts. Mind-mapping is not only a valuable tool for my stage performances as a mentalist but also an effective method for brainstorming new ideas.

The quest for inspiration remains an ever-present adventure for writers. Whether ideas come unexpectedly or require coaxing, the creative process is as captivating as the stories we ultimately weave. I invite you to share your own methods for brainstorming new ideas, as we embark on a journey of imagination and exploration together.

The Humanity!", exclaimed while witnessing the ill-fated Hindenburg's final moments.

Here is the interview he gave me.

Interviewer (Herbert Morrison): Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight, we have a special guest with us, author Chris Johnson, who has written a thrilling new novel. Welcome, Mr. Johnson.

Chris Johnson: Thank you, Mr. Morrison. It's an honour to be here.

Morrison: Your novel sounds intriguing. Can you give us a brief overview?

Johnson: Certainly, Mr. Morrison. "The Paradox of Buck Nowlan" is an exhilarating time travel adventure that follows the journey of Tony Buck Nowlan, the inventor of a secretive time-machine. He finds himself on a mission to uncover a shocking secret about his personal history. Along the way, he encounters danger, mystery, and unexpected twists.

Morrison: Fascinating! Tell me, Mr. Johnson, I couldn't help but notice that one of the scenes in your book is set on the Hindenburg on May 6, 1937. Can you tell us a bit about that?

Johnson: Ah, yes! That particular scene takes place during the ill-fated landing of the Hindenburg airship. I enjoy blending real-world events and elements with imagination to create a captivating narrative.

Morrison: Absolutely fascinating, Mr. Johnson. I'm sure our listeners are eager to get their hands on your book. When can they expect to find it?

Johnson: "The Paradox of Buck Nowlan" is set to release on August 1st, 2023. Today, I have the pleasure of sitting down with the esteemed author, Chris Johnson, who has taken the art of time travel and woven it into his latest novel, "The Paradox of Buck Nowlan." Welcome, Mr. Johnson.

Chris Johnson: Thank you, Mr. Wells. It's an honour to be here.

Interviewer (HG Wells): The concept of time travel has fascinated readers for centuries. What inspired you to explore this theme in your book?

Chris Johnson: Well, Mr. Wells, your own work, "The Time Machine," has been a tremendous inspiration. I've always been captivated by the idea of traversing through time, witnessing historical events, and exploring the consequences of altering the past. It's a concept that sparks endless possibilities and fuels the imagination.

Interviewer (HG Wells): I'm flattered to hear that my work has had such an impact. Now, tell us about the protagonist, Buck Nowlan. What challenges does he face in his time-travelling adventures?

Chris Johnson: Buck Nowlan is a brilliant inventor who discovers a shocking secret about his personal history. As he embarks on a journey through time, he faces the challenge of balancing his desire to uncover the truth with the promises he has made to his loved ones. His encounters with other time-travellers, the perils of history, and the ethical dilemmas he encounters make for a thrilling and thought-provoking adventure.

Interviewer (HG Wells): It sounds like a compelling narrative, indeed. How do you approach the concept of time travel in your book? Do you follow any particular theories or principles?

Chris Johnson: I've tried to incorporate a mix of scientific theories and imaginative elements to create a believable and exciting time-travel experience. While the ChronoSpace, Buck's invention, has its own rules and mechanics, I've drawn inspiration from various theories, including the concept of branching timelines and the potential butterfly effect.

Interviewer (HG Wells): Fascinating! As a time-travel enthusiast myself, I'm eager to dive into your book. Lastly, what do you hope readers will take away from "The Paradox of Buck Nowlan"?

Chris Johnson: Above all, I hope readers will be entertained by the thrilling journey and the complex characters they'll encounter. But beyond that, I also want to spark their imagination and make them ponder the consequences of altering the past. Time travel opens up discussions about fate, free will, and the delicate balance of history. I hope readers will be inspired to contemplate these concepts long after they've finished reading.

Interviewer (HG Wells): It's been a pleasure talking to you, Mr. Johnson. "The Paradox of Buck Nowlan" sounds like a remarkable addition to the time travel genre. Thank you for sharing your insights, and I wish you every success with your book.

Chris Johnson: Thank you, Mr. Wells. It's been an honour to discuss my work with you. I hope readers will enjoy the adventure I've crafted within the pages of "The Paradox of Buck Nowlan."

If only it were real!

One thing that is real is "The Paradox of Buck Nowlan" is due out on 1st August, 2023.
A lady called Hannah.

That's all I know about her. I've never seen the way she walks, so I don't know how many men's furtive glances she attracts while grocery shopping. Nor have I seen the light dancing from her eyes.

Only her voice drifts through my memory, and the shock and fear that tinged it when she mistakenly dialled my number on that October afternoon in 2002.

I was three weeks into a new in-between clerical job at a mortgage broker company in Perth when my phone rang.

Looking around to make sure no one was watching me talking on work time, I rolled my chair close to the window, and answered the unfamiliar number. And hoped it wasn't a debt collector.

"Hello?"

Honey-sweet aural ambrosia flowed into my ear. A bewitching voice filled with the kind of feminine vulnerability that could inspire a war as she sobbed, then stammered: "I've had an accident."

She should've been talking to someone she knew and trusted. Not a stranger. Not me.

"You have the wrong number."

"Wait!"

I stopped from hanging up. "Yes?"

"I've called the ambulance. But I -"

Then I recognised her voice. The sound of someone who needs a kind caring ear.

"Sure. Let's talk."

So I listened to her. We talked. She said she was on the Stirling Highway -- not that far from my office. She had swerved to avoid a car that had braked suddenly. Hit a guard rail or something. She was in shock. We talked until help arrived for her.

I never heard from her again, until my phone beeped a couple of months later.

"Merry Christmas from Hannah. You probably don't remember me, but you answered my wrong number call from a traffic accident. Thank you for listening."

On New Year's Eve 2002, while waiting for the witching hour, I started writing "Call Me", the opening scene inspired by the mysterious woman and her call to a wrong number in an hour of need. I kept putting it off before finally finishing it in 2008.

But it remains a favourite of mine because I learned something.

People won't always recall our names, but they will always remember how we made them feel.

To read more of her story, it's the first in Twelve Strokes of Midnight.

Read it here at: https://payhip.com/b/kjZc

You can subscribe to my newsletter at: https://www.subscribepage.com/chrisjohnsonwrites

Chris Johnson - Mentalist and Authorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09263930589108679744noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-520041849273224891.post-81015609118466684642021-12-24T06:57:00.003+10:002021-12-24T07:09:40.819+10:00An Interview with Craig Ramsey

Chris Johnson: We're lucky today to meet the main character from the explosive psychic thriller series -- Craig Ramsey. The fellow whose books I found buried in the--

CJ: Spoilers, Craig. Some haven't read The Universe Crack'd yet. It's okay. This won't take long. You will be back in time for Christmas dinner with your family and new friends.

CR: Great. It's not often one meets their Creator, I guess... But a whole world of people who know me. How much do they know?

CJ: So far, everyone has been across how you met Brianna Cogan. And just like where you come from, they know about your abilities to fathom information from the touch of your hand. And that you keep it a secret from most people. But they also know you can see and commune with the dead... oh, and the ectoplasm

CR: Bloody hell!

CJ: Craig, what would you say is the biggest thing to define you?

CR: Hmm. Not sure why you are asking, but there are many things. The day Celia, my first wife, and our daughter died. I still visit their graves. Then again, I have Emily Fraser who has been like a mother to me, even if she is a ghost. I have known her almost my whole life. And of course, I have Brianna, my wife now, and our daughter, Louise.

CJ: Interesting. And your abilities?

CR: Well, yeah, but I don't think powers define us. An athlete isn't defined by how fast they can run or how high they jump. We are defined by the choices we make and how we cope under different circumstances. But I have a question for you, Chris.

CJ: Fire away.

CR: You have put me through trauma when I met the demon who killed my first wife and daughter. You even had me tortured by him and don't forget Colonel Blaze. Not to mention this tooth that's twisted out of place since I caught that bullet Denton shot at me. Or the recent stint on that --

CJ: Your question being?

CR: I thought I had settled down before Louise's birth. But you brought me back for another adventure. What else do you have planned for me?

CJ: For a moment there, I thought you would ask me about Emily. Wouldn't you like to know more about her?

CR: (a quizzical eyebrow raises) Emily? What about her?

CJ: We have run out of time, Craig.

When did you start writing?

I have had to write in a professional, technical capacity for several decades. After high school, I stopped all creative writing – on reflection the demands of a fairly dry and technical degree exhausted me of creativity. Two decades on, I made a decision to start again. I started with small writing prompts, writing competitions – it all helped me find my flow again. In 2017 I completed NaNoWriMo, and the result became my debut novel three years – several drafts, several round of beta readers and professional editing later. During those years, I also completed a creative writing course in Sydney, started going to writing festivals and joining online writing groups.

What advice would you give a new writer, someone just starting out?

That if you think you are, you are. If you want write, write. You don’t need to show anyone, and if you do, you don’t need to listen to everyone. If you enjoy writing, you are a writer. I would encourage you to find your tribe – others you are comfortable reading your work in front off, get encouragement and advice from.

What time of the day do you usually write?

Firstly, I have to admit, I can’t write at night. If I sit still after a long day, well, my eyes get heavy, and productive writing from 5am till about 7am. I try a routine of going to Crossfit classes every second morning at 5am, and write on the other. This way I keep a good waking routine, as well as sleeping patterns! That all said, I still need at least two coffers during that time to get the neurons and creativity firing. As I work about an hour from home, if I am lucky enough to a seat on the bus, I might squeeze in a few more words on my commute.

How do you do research for your books?

My first novel, Death Investor, featured many locations that I know well – technology parks, office spaces, pubs and fast-food restaurants. Of course, Google StreetView and the internet are an amazing tool to find the details that matter to the story.

The novel I am writing currently, the sequel to Death Investor, draws significantly on the people and an industry exposure I had working in a company that focused on gas pipelines and energy. My story is complete fiction, but the people, stories, and industry news offer so many possibilities and criminal ideas!

How many books have you written? Which is your favourite?

I have a debut novel, Death Investor published (May 1, 2020) and in early stages of the sequel now. It’s working title is Pipeline of Death, and follows the police team, led by the main protagonist Detective Reid and Detective Kidman, in their investigation of the disappearance, and then murder, of a CEO of gas pipeline company.

There are several stories planned in the Death series – at this point I would like to see Reid rise up to fill her true capabilities and power, though I am not sure where that would leave the older Detective Kidman.

Do you have a favourite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

I really enjoy the side or minor characters; I had a lot of fun writing them. Queenie and Big Al were fun – I can visualise both them at a dingy pub right now in real life! In terms of depth, there is a lot more to be revealed through Reid, and a dark side to Kidman that never really made it into this story will be shown in future stories I am sure.

The other police officer I enjoy is Jones – he is such a straight, by the book person, and he is based totally on a constable I knew whilst I worked at NSW Police in the early 2000’s.

Where do you get your inspiration?

The overarching stories come from events in the media – corruption, murder, grudges – they are as old as life itself. The places and people come from my life – people I have worked with, met, friends with etc. Details and specifics of a location are my direct memory of offices I have worked in – desk layouts, the old radio in the corner, computers that didn’t work – all of these are directly from places I have worked. I just make sure I don’t refer to them directly in the story to avoid trouble with work colleagues!!

Can you share with us something about the book that isn’t in the blurb?

Of course I had way of knowing at the time, but the technology that is described in the book is very similar to which governments around the world are asking the citizens to using to track their movements to manage their COVID-19 response. This is a use I really didn’t contemplate. With so much at stake, striking the balance between privacy and public good is still no clearer.

Are there any secrets from the book (that aren’t in the blurb), you can share with your readers?

One street though, is a reference that I took from The Fatalist, by Campbell McConachie. It’s a dark true story of Australian multiple murderer Lindsey Rose. The author knew Rose from a local pub – the were mates, as you become with people see regularly at the pub in Australia. Years later, McConachie sees Rose on TV and his crimes are revealed. So back to my story, I had a scene set in a particular suburb, was reading that book at the time, and included the street which Rose grew up in the story.

Also, I did name a character after a friend of my wife – not because he resembled him, but I liked his name. I’d forgotten I did this, and when my wife read the story for the first time, I had some explaining to do!

Your story is set in Sydney, Australia. Why did you choose that as the setting for your book?

They say write what you know. I live in Sydney, and think it is a wonderful city full of wonderful attractions and people. I love the Harbour Bridge, the harbour itself and the areas around the city. It’s no surprise these feature heavily in the story – the detectives drive around these areas, visit pubs and cafes, and the occasional car chase down the streets I know thrown in for good measure!

What is the key theme and/or message in the book?

The mixture of business, privacy, personal history and corruption connections are the themes of Death Investor. But today, especially, the relevance of technology and privacy is critical to public life, whether to monitor your thoughts interpreted from online activity, to monitoring your movements – whether they knowingly consent or not.

In Death Investor, Peter Maher invents a program that tracks your movements based on freely available data on your phone, and the environment around you. It’s very powerful – people don’t always to share the location, where they go, when they go, and how they see.

Right now, during COVID-19 crisis, governments are rolling out software the remarkable similar to Peter’s to aid in virus contact tracking. The Singapore, UK and Australia all have plans – in fact Singapore has 20% of its population voluntarily reporting their location via a phone app. This has huge positive benefits for COVID-19 control, and if not managed careful, huge negative consequences for societal privacy. The core of Death Investor story is a murder investigation of the developer of the same software.

It's not everyday one meets an author like BG Hilton, so when the fates crossed our paths, I'm glad I had the opportunity. BG has also had a varied career over the years. For all I know, we may have crossed paths in IT.

BG Hilton is an Australian speculative fiction author. Over the years, he has worked in IT, finance, advertising and hospitality, doing jobs so tedious that his only escape was entertaining himself with crazy fantasy stories. Now he has a more interesting life in the education sector, he writes those stories down in the hope of entertaining others. His work has been published in Pseudopod, Andromeda Spaceways Magazine, Antipodean SF and other venues. He lives with his family in Sydney, and consequently spends a lot of time in traffic. When not hobbies include resting. You can find his blog at bghilton.com, or he's at @bghilton on Twitter and @bghilton.author on Facebook.
Champagne Charlie and the Amazing Gladys

Genre: Steampunk

Synopsis: Hung-over aristocrat Edward 'Charlie' Decharles awakens in the back of a steam cab, only to discover that the driver has been murdered. Unused to feeling responsible for anything, he feels compelled to find the killer. As he investigates, he meets 'The Amazing' Gladys Dunchurch, a stage magician's assistant whose employer has disappeared -- and not in a good way. They form an alliance – Charlie will help Gladys with his considerable resources and Gladys will help Charlie with her even more considerable brains.
Soon they discover that their respective mysteries are not only connected to each other, but related to other seemingly unrelated strangeness transpiring in London – the murder of an astronomer, an attack on a patent medicine factory, a mysterious cult in an idyllic town and reports of deadly creatures in the London sewers.

Publish Date: 1/3/2020
Publisher: Odyssey Books (odysseybooks.com.au)

What made you choose this genre?

I've always loved the Victorian scifi aesthetic. As I kid, I loved those old 1960s and 70s retrufuture movies like First Men in the Moon, At the Earth's Core and of course 20000 Leagues Under the Sea. As I grew up, I started to get into the books that they were based on. It was only later that I discovered that there was an entire genre based around the aethetic (if not necessarily the ideology) of these sorts of stories, and I fell in love with it almost at once. So when, after years of wanting to write a novel I finally sat down and did it, it was only natural that Steampunk is what I would have chosen.

What's the basic plot of 'Champagne Charlie and the Amazing Gladys'?

Charlie and Gladys takes place in a world where some very obsolete physics theories turn out to actually be true, allowing for the development of Steampunk technology. In this world, English aristorcrat Edward 'Charlie' Decharles is working to solve a murder. Realising that he has no idea about solving crimes, he enlists the help of the talented and resourceful Australian music hall performer Gladys Dunchurch, who is hunting for her missing employer. The two uncover a conspiracy that casts a shadow across the technology that powers their world and the people who control it -- and lead to the discovery of alien creatures on Earth. It's inspired in part by a very old newspaper hoax about life on the Moon, and includes some other interesting Victoriana -- music halls, patent medicine and opium dens.

Which is your favourite character and why?

I refuse to pick from my lead characters, because I love Charlie and Gladys equally. So I'm going to go with Charlie's father, Admiral Lord Decharles. He's this crazy old nautical man, who hates modern technology and pines for the days of wooden sailing ships, but when the crisis comes he's more than up to the task. Initially, he was only supposed to be a cameo, turning up in one scene to shout at his son for drinking too much. But I liked him so much that he started taking over more and more of the book, until he became a minor protagonist in his own right.

What is the story behind the title 'Champagne Charlie and the Amazing Gladys'?

I usually struggle to name my stories, but this one was easy. I actually had the title before I started writing. I'd decided that one of the main characters would be a drunken English aristocrat, and this put me in mind of the old George Leybourne music hall song 'Champagne Charlie'. The other character was to be a stage magician's assistant, so 'The Incredible' this or 'The Astounding' that, but I wanted to balance the superlative with a very prosaic name, and 'The Amazing Gladys' narrowly beat out 'The Astonishing Enid'. It's not usually how I go about creating characters, but I think it worked.

What are you working on now?

I'm working on a sequel to Charlie and Gladys. I really like my Steampunk with elements of real Victorian history, so it's going to be inspired by the case of the Titchbourne Claimant, Victorian Spiritualism and a couple of other things.

What is your writing kryptonite?

Sex scenes. Just can't write 'em. I can write a romance scene well enough, as long as everyone involved is clothed. But I think of characters like people I know -- I know they have sex, but I don't feel like I need to see it.

What literary pilgrimages have you been on?

I've been on a few, but my two favourite ones were on a trip to Devon a few years ago. I got to see the Cobb at Lyme Regis, from Jane Austen's 'Persuasion' and also the part of Dartmoor that inspired 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'. That was really fun. There was thick fog on the moor which limited the visibility but it really made the place seem atmospheric and mysterious. I could really see why Doyle chose it as a location.

What authors did you dislike at first, but later grew into?

Jane Austin. I tried to read her a dozen times or so, but never got past the first chapter. Then I had one, 'Persuasion' as required reading for a course, and I forced myself to power through the first two chapters and absolutely loved the rest of the book. This has been my experience with her work ever since -- I have real issues with her opening chapters, but if I can get through them I adore the rest of the book.
Fresh from its nest, a juvenile magpie danced on my front footpath under its mother's watchful eye as she sat on my fence. A cup of green tea beside me, my pen danced across my notebook in which I have kept my ideas since brainstorming Demon Blade.

I remembered other books I had written or had planned to write. There were about seven in total I had written in high school. One is a series of five I actually finished. I'm toying with the idea of rewriting it and refreshing it for modern times. Another standalone novel could conceivably publish now, starring a couple of characters you may recognise from my Craig Ramsey series.

I hunted through the boxes in my garage until I found that old folder: a red two-ringed binder on which I had drawn The Phantom and James Bond because they were my childhood heroes... apart from Spiderman and Batman.

Have you ever smelled thirty-year-old foolscap paper? It evoked old memories. Some good, some terrible. But damn those years were fun.

From out of the memories jumped a horror novel I outlined in senior high school. The outline, handwritten on foolscap, looked good still. I updated it... and here it is.

What made you choose this genre?
I didn't really set out specifically to write in this genre, I think it is just what comes naturally to me. This is the type of books that I love to read, so it only seems natural that it is also what I would write.

What’s the story behind your book title?
The title just came to me actually. There is the two books within the 'Vampire Hunter Prophecy' series - From Dusk & To Dawn.
I guess that the main idea behind the titles is the life of a Vampire Hunter occurs between Dusk and Dawn.

Which scene from your book do you like best and why?
This is hard to pick, as there are so many scenes I like for different reasons, but to pick one, it would have to be the scene where my two main characters in the series meet for the first time. I think it is a lovely scene and it is from this point on that their lives are about to take on a very diffent direction.

Which is your favourite character and why?
That is like asking me who is my favourite child, (my eldest by the way, in case you were wondering - no seriously, I'm just joking).
Like your children, you love them all equally, but differently because they all have different personalities.
One of my main characters from the 'Vampire Hunter Prophecy' series, Jack, would be my favourite if I had to pick one, because the character is based on a personal connection and was really the whole reason for the story.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?
Neither. Reading and writing are actually two things that help me unwind and destress.
Writing is my time out from everything else.

What is your writing Kryptonite?
Fatigue. Writing is only a side hobby, so I work and have two kids, which makes life busy.
When I do find time to write, somethimes I just don't have the mental engergy to do it.

Did you ever consider writing under a pseudonym?
Yes I have. One of the books that I am currently writing is a romance, which is different to my normal Urban Fantasy genre. So I thought if I ever publish it, I would do so under a pseudonym, to separate it from my other books.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
I don't really think about it. I just come up with an idea and go from there.
I'm lucky in the sense that I don't have to put much thought into book ideas, they just tend to come to me. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, it doesn't.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
The wolf. I think that they are an amazing animal and I love their pack mantality and bond.
They are an integral part of my Urban Fantasy series - 'The Vampire Hunter Prophecy'.

How do you select the names of your characters?
With most of my characters, especially the main characters, the names are just part of who they are and just come to me. With some of the other characters, I have an old baby naming book that I use. I like to try and pick a name that represents the character.

What is your favorite childhood book?
I loved reading as a child and read lots of different books. I loved the choose your own adventure and the Famous Five, but the stand out book that I loved and as a child and still do, is 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe'.

Do you believe in writer’s block?
I have never suffered from writer's block, but I'm sure that other authors have. I do suffer from a lack of mojo though. I have plenty of ideas and want to write, but just find that sometimes I get tired and don't have the energy to do it.

Quick quiz:
Favourite food: Italian
Favourite drink: A cup of tea (or a glass of chardonnay depending on my mood)
Best holiday spot: Don't have a particular holiday destination we go to every year, but if there is one place I had the chance to go back to, it would be Scotland.
Favourite song at the moment: Higher Love by Kygo ft Whitney Houston
With writing, are you a plotter or (seat-of-your) pantser? It is all plotted out in my head, so a bit of both.
Star Wars or Lord of the Rings: Star Wars
Best superpower: Immortality
Number one thing to do on your bucket list: Eat and drink my way around France with my husband
D L Richardson is the best selling author of science fiction and supernatural fiction. Her books have received starred reviews in Readers Favorite, Chick-Lit Cafe, and BestThrillers.com. She has walked to the rim of a volcano in Vanuatu and snowboarded down its ashen slope, skied in Canada and Alaska, and often goes on camping and hiking trips to the lakes and mountains.

She has held jobs at Festival Records and Paramount Pictures, and once owned a second-hand clothing store. She is also a former singer/songwriter/bass player who gave it all away to write novels. She regrets nothing! To quote a Lita Ford song, "Rock and roll made me what I am today".

I was playing in a band and I went to rehearsal one night. I was probably twenty, and the other band at the studio were in their forties. I had a light bulb moment where I didn’t want to be trying to make it as a musician in my 40s. And it wasn’t looking as if we were finding any success soon. So I had a long, hard think about what I could do for the rest of my life. I loved reading, so I chose writing. Today my writing motivation often comes from watching shows on TV, and I sit there and think “I don’t want to just watch this, I want to write this.”

What other writing have you done?

I started writing in the horror genre. Then I broke up with a guy and started dating another. I was big into watching Sex and the City at the time, so I wrote a few chick-lit/romance books. I also wrote a kids book featuring dogs and cats as the main characters which was inspired by a dream I had.

What’s the story behind your book title?

Earth Quarantined started off with many different titles. It has also undergone a few changes. Major changes. So I could never design the cover until the story was complete. It was while I was designing the cover art, I was explaining to my houseguest at the time what the book was about. After babbling on and trying to explain the story, I just said, “Earth gets quarantined by aliens” and that was how I finally agreed upon a book title.

What is the first book that made you cry?

Black Beauty. Made me the first time I read. Made me cry the second I read it. It is the type of book that will always make me cry.

What is your writing Kryptonite?

Music would be my Kryptonite. I read that many authors have music on while they’re working. Every time I do that I get into party mode. So I write in solitude. When they say that writing is a lonely business, in my case it’s because I have to work in silence.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I definitely try to be original. Possibly to my detriment because it can be difficult to market a book that doesn’t fit into a neat pigeon hole. Thankfully, readers are now becoming used to the cross fit promo, such as “It’s Hunger Games meets Jumanji” so it gives me some way of explaining what a book is about. I have received very nice reviews about my books not featuring the usual tropes, and that I don’t rehash them. I think this is because I also like twists in my books. A good twist is something the reader should never see coming. That forces me to come up with invevtive ways to tell the story.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

I have 3 unpublished books and about another 3 half-finished books. I plan to get back to finish these. Yet whenever I open up the manuscript, I think “this will be a quick fix” and I’m disappointed to discover it is not a quick fix. It needs more work than I can commit to, due to my current writing commitments. But I recently discovered that one book I wrote in 2006, a children’s book, is absolutely finished. I think I held off doing anything with it because I’m not a children’s author. But I like the story, so I will do something with it.

What’s the best way to market your books?

I am finding that series, or bundling books is an effective way to market. I have 3 young adult paranormal books. They are standalone titles. But I am able to bundle them in ads because they have something in common. Same with my supernatural thriller novellas. They’re all standalone but I’ve given them an overarching series titles. And then there are my serialised fiction works. I only have 1 complete trilogy, but I’m working on 2 more. The “market” seems to work for series.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

Ah, research. I love doing research. Always have. I loved school projects. Research is essential for my books, because I haven’t experienced these things myself – apocalypse, space travel, organ transplants, astral projection. My aim is to provide speculative fiction that could be possible, but I don’t want to take away from the story so I sprinkle in facts as part of a conversation. I often do the research after the first draft, because I don’t know exactly what will end up in the boo. This method saves me a lot of wasted time. I would probably spend about a week or two weeks in total gathering research over the course of writing the book.

Does your family support your career as a writer?

Yes. I have an amazing family. My sisters, my brothers, my mother, they all read and buy my books. Yes, they buy them. They don’t expect them for free because they know how hard I work. My mother even BEAT read one of my young adult books and provided helpful advice.
This week, I interviewed A.A. Warne, who is a creative soul in many ways. Originally an artist, she stumbled across writing at a special time in life. Her covers are brilliant, and you can definitely judge the books by their cover and know you're in for a reading treat.

A. A. Warne writes elaborate, strange, dark, and twisted stories. In other words, speculative fiction.
Located at the bottom of the Blue Mountains in Sydney, Australia, Amanda was born an artist and grew up a painter before deciding to study pottery.
But it wasn't until she found the art of the written word that her universe expanded.
A graduate of Western Sydney University in Arts, Amanda now spends her time wrestling three kids and writing full time.

What was the defining event that made you start writing?

After I had my first child, I had to give up my art. At the time I was practising pottery and then came along my daughter who never slept day or night. Pottery is a big all-day practice that takes lots of time to get ready and clean up. So I put it aside for a few years and decided to go back to drawing. I planned years of art, complete with drawings within a month. Then I got bored. And it wasn't the boredom where you pick up jogging to kill the time. It was a boredom that got into my soul.
One of my really close friends saw this in me, no matter how hard I tried to hide it. And she threw a book at me. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. She demanded I read it and I laughed at her. I wasn't a reader! I was an artist. But I did it anyway. Each time my daughter went to sleep, I picked up the book and read it. Then I tracked down the next one and read that too. From that moment onwards, I haven't stopped reading.
But the boredom was still there, deep in my soul. I couldn't figure it out. Was this the depression that mum's have after having a baby? No. It wasn't a depression, it wasn't the fact that I was run off my feet with a baby who never slept, the house was always clean, and I had things to do like reading and exercising and eating right. But I wasn't creating!
So I bought a notebook and my favourite type of pen. The only problem was, I had nothing to write. The first page was lines saying something like, "I am writing but I have nothing to say."
Then the dreams started. I dreamt the same dream three nights in a row and bam! I had a story.
Now, I'm telling my brain to stop sending stories! Because I can't juggle so many, but no, I don't think I have control of my imagination. If my imagination had any more control - I wouldn't sleep, eat or do anything but create!

What are you working on now?

Ha! So many projects that you'll wish you had never asked! I'm a scatter brain and with that means I can work on multiple projects at once. Then when I set the editor in place, I buckle down and complete the story.
The Reluctant Wizard is in its last stage and that one is about a boy who gets accepted into an exclusive wizard school, but he realises that the wizards are not what they make out to be.
I've just finished a draft to Dawn of the End and I've commissioned the cover. It's about a prisoner who is transported from one prison to another when the Earth is invaded by an unknown alien entity.
And Michelle and I are mapping out The Hidden Truths Trilogy book two! I know everyone is waiting for that one. For those who are not familiar, it's about a psychic who meets two guys, unbeknown to her that one is a shape-shifting reptilian and the other is in an secret society, and they're at war with each other.
I have just finished a short-story called FrankenSanta where a trinity of Elves accidentally kill Santa Claus and think it's a good idea to bring him back, but Santa isn't the same. It's due out Christmas 2019 and advance readers have said it's hilarious. I had so much fun writing it.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Both! I'm totally energised when I do anything creative. I'm a painter, potter, drawer, writer, you name it and I'm creating! If I run out of art supplies, I start knocking down walls and renovating.
But that being said, my creative mind never switches off. I will work myself into the ground. During the beginning stages of a book - when I'm first getting an idea - my mind goes into overdrive. I'm reading non-fiction, writing down conversations, analysing people's faces, body language, architecture, etc! And this is all great techniques to get into the book, but then somewhere between draft and re-write, I hit the exhaustion button.
So to avoid this obsessive behaviour, as energising as it is, I now collect lots of things for many different ideas that will eventually becomes books later on. That way I get excited about a new idea but put that energy into the book I'm currently finishing.

What are common traps for aspiring writers?

Rules and cliches.
Who invented writing rules? I mean, back off people! First they want us to 'find our voice' and then make sure that voice MUST be 'unique' but wait, jump through a million rules that no one can define? Madness!
Then the cliches - 'Write what you know!' Well then I can honestly, wholeheartedly say that I've been to another planet and explored their culture, plus have a tendency to jump inside people's minds time to time. So does that mean I actually write non-fiction?
Those two aside, there's one massive trap that, even after two published books, still keeps coming up. Judgement. Not the fact that I'm writing or publishing, but the idea that if you're not going to make lots of money or be famous, then why bother! This drives me bonkers. Life is not about money and being famous is a madness in itself. My imagination is vast and I have the ability to express that in art forms, including writing. So for me to create my imagination in form, that's my gift to the planet. And in turn, that is me experiencing life.

Have you ever gotten reader’s block?

Yes! You're probably going to laugh because I live in Australia, but I get 'winter block'! Ha! Like bears, I go into hibernation. I wish I could sleep for the duration of winter because I'm slow, sluggish and tired. Luckily winter here only last about twelve weeks and then bang! Straight back to warmer weather and I'm energised and creating again.
Very rarely do I read one book at a time. I have about five or six non-fiction books where I'm cross referencing or picking up to throw my imagination a curve ball and I don't let the writer control my ideas.
I do only read one fiction book at a time. That way I can dive into the story and let the writer lead me along the emotional rollercoasters.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I have no idea what readers want and I think it's a slippery slope to judge it in the fantasy world. I understand that genres like romance have their tropes and done right can be replicated but fantasy is boundless. And how do you cater for a never-ending possibility?
Originality is an interesting concept. For me, I try to feed my imagination possibilities: Nothing is impossible. Everything is true. And there is no such thing as limitations.
Now apply that to anything! And all of a sudden reality gets turned upside down and that's where new stuff comes from. Feeding the imagination allows us to see and experience and feel the world in a totally different way and that's what I do to generate my ideas.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

For me, nothing is off-limits. I finished my degree in Arts a couple of years ago. I do plan on starting my Masters soon but first I wanted to know where I stood in the world. I read and research other's arguments, opinions, beliefs, etc. and I needed to know where I stood, what my beliefs are and if I had opinions.
See I have a tendency to take a don't-pick-sides perception, which sounds odd but that's just me. What I do is see an idea from every different aspect possible. I like to know what's going on, what's not being said or seen, outside forces and this is applied from the micro and day-to-day stuff right to the big macro and universal stuff.
So when I graduated, I started reading everything. History, geography, conspiracy theories, science, biographies, etc. Then my interest diverted and I went into the history of science and all it's different branches.
At the moment I'm really focused on the unknown. What do we have evidence for but we don't know or understand it. So that takes me down the route of pyramids. Harmonic vibration healing. Hypnosis therapy. Ancient sites and architecture. etc. So I still research very widely and pull ideas out from all different places and apply them to whatever idea I feel that suits best. That's the best thing about planning a huge series or lots of different stories because I could read one research book and have content for five stories.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

Now you're really going to laugh. I am more comfortable at writing a male's voice and character than I am a female one. Gender is a learnt behaviour. We socialise our children from birth into proper 'girl' or proper 'boy' behaviour. And it's so ingrained into our society that we often don't realise that we're doing it. I hear it all the time, 'oh, he's such a boy' or 'because he's a boy' and that means females can't do the same?
I grew up surrounded by boys. Three across the road, two next door and my own brother. My mother is not a girly-girl either. She often had to save my father from spiders while he took off screaming. Now as an adult and with my own husband, I often laugh at how we swap gender roles. You can always find him baking cupcakes while I'm renovating the house.
So when it comes to writing, I easily jump into the man's head. Woman are complicated. They often are motivated by emotions or justify things through emotions. While men have the ability to disconnect emotionally and get things done. I tend to do that myself and I think that's because of my very-masculine upbringing.
Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?

Not in Heavy Dirty Soul or Concealed Power. But my upcoming books, yes! And lots of them. In Dawn of the End, it's a ten-book series that kick-starts a huge mega series. There is a lot planned out and then there is a fair amount of grey area that I'm still yet to explore. Essentially, I'm knitting together all of humanity's secrets that I've been researching. I can't give anything away because these secrets are super juicy, however Dawn of the End gives away one of the most intriguing ones.

Do you believe in writer’s block?

Heck yeah! Writer's block occurs so many different ways. I got it once during a really bad sickness that had me in hospital on and off for months. I couldn't even form a thought in my mind. It was like my mind had terminated. I was devastated. I thought my life was over. The doctor didn't sympathise with me. He didn't understand that my imagination is life and how all of a sudden was I not able to access it. But really I needed time to heal. Once my body healed, my mind went into overdrive and ten years later I'm still trying to catch up.
I tend to slow down on the writing around the times I catch a cold or feel a little sluggish from overdoing life in general, but now I've learnt to take time off, heal properly and by doing so my mind will catch up again.
So for me it's about the body, but for my writing friends it's about their minds. I feel like I don't run out of ideas because I'm constantly feeding my brain fresh content. If I see something that is interesting, I explore it. If a book grabs my attention, I buy it. If I'm fascinated by something, no matter how small, it becomes part of my office decor. Stimuli is key for writers - ideas, visuals, smelly candles, soft clothing, craft books, whatever. I feed my brain like I feed my body food. Then it has enough energy to produce another story.
What’s the basic plot of your book or series?
In The Leeth Dossier, a cross-genre sci-fi/fantasy series set around 2060, events at the Institute for Paranormal Dysfunction turns a ruthless researcher's naive young guinea pig, Sara, into the deadly assassin, Leeth.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
Originality, but being aware of readers. My main focus is on making my characters real: letting them be themselves and get into and out of trouble. Second to that, I try to meet readers’ expectations. Several reviewers described my first book or two as “brave”. And Leeth is very real to me: I’m writing the series to bring her to life (and for me, to find out what happens to her).

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
The series is very much a continuous series with deep connections through and across all the books. They follow my MC – a loveable assassin – with a continuing and developing cast of characters and plots. The gaps between the books vary betweens hours and days, or maybe weeks.
For an author starting out, I’ve done many things unwisely – learning my craft with a novel, rather than short stories; and then writing not just a single book, or even a short series, but a lengthy one. (I can’t see myself wrapping up all the major plot arcs and character development in less than ten books.)
How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?
I don’t think the publishing part of the work has changed my process at all. I suppose I’m more aware of the things I need to do around the writing that’s not actual writing or editing. But finishing my first book taught me how valuable it would be to involve my editor at the outset, to get some feedback on the sketchy outline of the book. Nowadays I also allow plenty of time for the structural edit and later rechecks and polishing.

What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?
The two key things are my cover designs from Mirella de Santana (in Brazil) and the developmental edits from my Editor, ThEditors.com (in Ireland). If I had to pick just one, I’d say the money paid to my editor.

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?
Probably talking my way out of being bullied.

What does literary success look like to you?
I consider myself ahead if the number of hours of enjoyment my books generate, exceeds the number of hours I spent creating them. I think I’ve put about 12,000 hours into creating the first four books, so if I assume it takes about eight hours to read one, then I’d need about 1500 readers.
Of course I’d like many more people to find and enjoy them.
But the best success would be to one day have a reader tell me that Leeth’s example helped them through a low point in their lives – that they took heart from Leeth’s story, and refused to give in or give up.

How many hours a day do you write?
It varies through the phase of the book. While I’m writing the first draft, I generally average about ten hours a day, six days a week. I ease off during the month or two I spend editing and revising before sending it to my editor. After sending it off I generally shift over to the publishing and marketing side of things, blogging more and more social media, and beginning to plan the launch and learning more about what I need to do on the business side.

How do you select the names of your characters?
I put a lot of thought into the names. Names have a network of meaning attached to them, etymologically and through connection with famous figures. So I try to find names that help me get inside the character. Names are super important; they’re a bit magical. Recently I was trying my hand at writing a short film script, and discovered I couldn’t continue when one of the characters stepped on stage until I’d named them properly – the instant I did, the words flowed.

Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?
I read them all. The good ones help me feel appreciated and understood. I get a little burst of pleasure to know someone enjoyed my book. For the bad ones, I think I can tell when it’s from someone who should not have read the book (my books aren’t for the faint-hearted), and more rarely from someone who’s just being destructive. I’m happy to receive constructive criticism, and that’s much more common. I learn from the constructive ones. E.g. if a reviewer misinterprets something, it tells me I need to be more overt. Recently, in book 4 a reviewer complained Leeth was growing too slowly as a character, which may mean I need to somehow signal that Leeth’s personal journey of growth will be a slow one, covering many books.

Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?
Yes. But more plot foreshadowing than ‘Easter eggs’.

What was your hardest scene to write?
The scene in the first book immediately after Leeth’s magic unfolds, and Harmon get just how he wants. At that point Leeth still has a bare inkling of how deeply he’s been manipulating her.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?
I figure about 3000 hours of work. Partly it depends on the length, but it’s not that simple. I think book 4 was over 4000. I can write very fast – e.g. after some discussion about splitting the MS for book 2 in half, I spent 10 days plotting new stuff to make a satisfying story – 24 new scenes. I then wrote those over the next 11 days, a total of 44k words. So I can be fast, when doing my first draft. Structural edits take a month or few, after I get the detailed feedback from my editor. From there I spend a couple of months polishing, copy-editing, and then polishing. I also try to do what I call an “oomph” analysis, where I self-rate each chapter on Character Development, Plot development, World building, Pace, Tension, Emotion, Humour.
I’m still trying to work out what that tells me!

Do you believe in writer’s block?
Yes and no. I think there are many, many things you can do to induce writer’s block. But once you get a feel for what the main ones are, and how to harness your unconscious, you can avoid it.
After dead silence from publishers with the unsolicited MS, and as my day job grew stressful, I stalled for ten years by trying to visualise a certain scene I wanted to write. But since learning about the Unconscious Thought Theory, writer’s block has been a thing of the past.
Oh: and in book 4, I finally reached the scene I’d been wanting to write, and it turned out very well I feel. (NB: it’s the scene in the nightclub, Sybarus.)

Quick quiz:
Favourite food: lobster mornay
Favourite drink: fresh-squeezed OJ. Alcoholic: butterscotch schnapps.
Silliest saying: What could possibly go wrong?
Best holiday spot: a coral island.
Favourite song at the moment: Castles, by Freya Riding
With writing, are you a plotter or (seat-of-your) pantser? Pantser.
Star Wars or Lord of the Rings: LOTR
Best superpower: Do What I Say.
Number one thing to do on your bucket list: Finish writing my series,

What’s the hardest thing about promoting your books?
It’s so hard to pick just one thing – I’m increasingly coming to feel that no one at all deeply understands how the marketing of books works. It’s a big, complex problem. But for me specifically, I think the hardest thing is that I can’t just try to attract any and all readers, because the key relationship at the heart of the first two books is the one between Leeth and the researcher who ‘acquires’ her, and they delve into some deep and dark waters. My books are a mix of dark and light, but they’re not for everyone. I’m experimenting now with the summary/warning message:
"An abusive childhood creates a disturbingly innocent killer, who through a few precious friendships and her own strength and courage, slowly changes to something far more."

Aiki, thanks for joining us today. What was the defining event that made you start writing?

I’ve always written stories. Early on it was terrible romances. But when my son was about 8 we realised he was dyslexic and he struggled to read fat stories like Harry Potter etc, even though he wanted to. So I wrote a series of 5 books for him, entitled 80AD. They’re a portal/gamer fantasy series set in an online computer game that sucks two YA kids into 80AD Britain (then, 80AD Sweden, 80AD Egypt, 80AD India, and finally 80AD China). My son and his friends loved them so much that I decided to publish them. Having NO clue what I was doing, I threw them up on Smashwords and Amazon. They went a bit crazy and have had about 400 000 downloads. I still get fan mail from kids of 10 through to grandparents of 60+ from all over the world.

So then I decided I really should learn how to write better and maybe take a crack at this writing thing a bit more seriously. Which reminds me – I really should go back and re-edit those stories!

What is your writing Kryptonite?

My own insecurities. Even though I’ve learned heaps about the craft of writing since 80AD came out, I still feel like I need to learn how to writer better. Sometimes that makes it hard to write; that feeling of not being good enough.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

Neither, to be honest. I just write what I want to read. I’m not in this to be rich or famous. I just like to tell stories. If I can tell a story that explores a theme important to me, then I can be reasonably sure there will be a few people out there who like it, too. I tried writing to market and hated what I wrote. As soon as I start focussing on economics it all goes very badly in the creative side of things. I have to stay true to what I love (Although I do realise there are people who can both write directly to a current economic target-market, AND love writing those stories. Unfortunately, I’m not one of them.)

Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?

Great question. Who’s to say what’s a ‘strongly felt’ emotion and what’s not? It’s so subjective. I’m quite logical and pragmatic, myself. While it’s true I do have difficulty understanding people who react very dramatically to things, it doesn’t stop me from writing them as characters. As a writer, you have to be able to write people who are NOT you, otherwise all your characters are just…you.

Observe how people behave. Study and read psychology books. Ask people how they think and feel. It’s just another type of research.

What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

I’m part of a hugely supportive writing group where we actually get together and see each other face to face! Can you believe it, in this day and age? It gives us all people we trust to give good feedback, beta-readers we can rely on, people who can help us nut out stubborn plot issues, or just people who will cheer our successes and commiserate with our failures. We all need a tribe. A good writers group helps you through the tough times and gives you inspiration to write better and to help others succeed.

What’s your favourite scene you’ve written?

In the IRON-FIRE-STEEL series it was the climactic gladiator-style battle scene in the slave-games my heroine was trying to win. A huge stadium full of people. Badguys trying to kill her. She and her companions had to hastily form a combat-ready team from a group of reluctant fellow-slaves and try to defeat other teams of slaves. It involved throwing crappy knives, standing on a pile of dead bodies, and a lot of cool action sequences. My husband, when he read it, actually punched the air and said ‘Yesss!’ at the end.

In the Blackbirds Sing, stories, I think it was the second-last story – the climax again where all the women come together in a last-ditch attempt to save Queen Elizabeth of York and the young baby Prince Arthur. That one made my husband cry, so I figure I did my job.

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?

When I first read Black Beauty in about Grade 2 and bawled my eyes out over it. And every time I re-read it, I cried again. And when I discovered science fiction and fantasy novels and was transported into other worlds that I could practically see and taste. Plus, I think I learned more useful information from fiction than I ever did at school.

How do you balance making demands on the reader with taking care of the reader?

My pet peeve is writing advice that says ‘write everything in very plain language’. I don’t believe in dumbing language down. You can use interesting language and still be understood. I DO think you need to write to your genre and audience. Because I write fantasy and sci-fi mostly, I have no issues with adding in the occasional unusual or tricky word. If it’s well done and in context, your reader will work it out without being jarred out of the story. So for me, the trick is balancing the modern demand for faster books with minimal ‘infodump’ against the need for fantasy writing to be more eloquent and descriptive.

What does literary success look like to you?

I’ve been back and forth with myself on this topic. Having been in the industry a while now, I’ve come to realise that it’s a fool’s game to chase any kind of external measure of success. But it’s not easy. We’re naturally a tribal animal. Approval of others is hardwired into our brains because (historically) without the approval/acceptance of our tribe, we die. I try to keep my WHY in front of mind to subdue the little voices telling me success is more good reviews and acceptance by bigger publishers. As long as I remember WHY I write – to explore themes that are important to me and tell stories I love – then that’s literary success to me.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

I’m a scientist by training, and a highly logical, organised person by inclination. So my tendency is to over-research rather than under. But I’ll usually research the basics before I start writing, then details as I write and need to worldbuild. When I was writing IRON, I had to spend quite a bit of time researching alternative technologies for things like building materials that didn’t require iron, chalk, fossil fuels, flint, etc, because the planet of that series was terraformed and had no history of life - therefore no significant iron deposits and no other resources resulting from a history of life.

But my next book that’s coming out – Blackbirds Sing – required a LOT of research and planning. It’s set in 1486 London, and I wanted to get that right. I researched so much that I found a mistake in the official map of London for 1520. To confirm it I contacted the Tower of London Archivist, then sent the evidence to the mapmaking company. The cartographer agreed (he was lovely) and is now changing the map.

All ridiculous amounts of research and so much of it never makes it into the story. But such deep rabbitholes of interesting stuff!

How do you select the names of your characters?

All different ways. Alere, the heroine from IRON, came from the name of a work customer’s company. Her story jumped into my head full-blown with her name. Jade and Phoenix from the 80AD series are deliberately-chosen Easter eggs that are significant to the entire plotline and their own, personal character arcs. Rowan, in the Shadows trilogy, has several layers – the Irish version, ‘Ruadhan’ means red-headed child, and she has auburn hair. But Rowan was also a wood meant to help ward off the fae/faery folk – the sidhe – of which she turns out to be one. And the names of all the various women in Blackbirds Sing took me ages to research as I had to find at least 24 medieval/Tudor female names that were distinct from each other so they wouldn’t get mixed up.

If you didn’t write, what would you do for work?

Wait, what? You mean there are authors who get to JUST write and don’t have to work? Damn! I run a full-time business as well. No rest for the insane writers, unfortunately.

Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?

Oh, yes. That part of the fun of research. Hiding Easter eggs is such fun. Especially when you get emails from readers who DO find them. Sometimes I forget I’ve done it, then a reader points it out and I get a little thrill as well and get to think – hey, that was pretty damned clever.

Does your family support your career as a writer?

Definitely. My husband is amazingly supportive. He’s always my first (and very biased) beta reader. I know if I can make him cry, I’m probably on track with the emotional content. My son loved my 80AD series and his enthusiasm helped convince me that I could do this writing thing.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

The 80AD series was very parttime, so it was 5 books written over about 3 years. IRON, FIRE, and STEEL took about 2 years because it involved so much research and I was learning a lot about writing. The Shadows trilogy took about a year and a half for all three. Because the first one got re-written three times as I learned about story structure. Blackbirds Sing took 7 months. It’s made up of 25 interlinked short stories that each affect the overarching plot of an attempt to kill Henry Tudor, King Henry VII. Which was VERY tricky to get right.

I have a quick quiz for you, Aiki.

Favourite food: heart-killing heavily salted hot chips/fries

Favourite drink: Non-alcoholic – oldfashioned lemonade (not softdrink); alcoholic, a good gin & tonic with cucumber

Silliest saying: Mine or someone else’s? You’d probably have to ask someone else what mine is. No idea.

Best holiday spot: Venice was pretty good. As was Florence. But China was pretty amazing, too.

Favourite song at the moment: Pretty much always : Broadsword, from Jethro Tull.

With writing, are you a plotter or (seat-of-your) pantser? In between. I know what the major story beats are likely to be, and I have a clear idea of the ending (like a big movie set-piece in my head). The bits in between though…

Star Wars or Lord of the Rings: This is not an Either-Or question. Both. And Star Trek. And and and and

Best superpower: Invisibility, combined with kickass martial arts skills (which are not a superpower). (as long as the invisibility included all clothing and weapons)

Number one thing to do on your bucket list: Go into orbit around Earth in a shuttle and see the Earth from space. Unfortunately, I do get VERY motion sick, so that one might not happen.

Blackbirds Sing (a Ruadhan Sidhe novel)

Genre: Historical fantasy

Four-and-twenty extraordinary women; one chance to save a kingdom. Early in the reign of Henry Tudor, King Henry VII, his seat on the throne of England is threatened by York loyalists. The only thing standing in their way is a four-hundred-year-old sidhe who just wants to be left alone, and a group of London women with a lot to lose if England is plunged back into war. But it is 1486, and women have no power, no money, and no ability to fight back against injustice.

Become immersed in the perilous lives of these women, as told through the medium of 25 interwoven short stories. A baker who can’t pay her church tithe; a prostitute selling her daughter’s virginity to pay her debts; a nun forced out into the world after 30 years; laundress whose son is murdered; a lady’s maid hiding her Jewish culture; a blind musician running a frightening marriage; a child-thief protecting her brother; and more. Each story is a piece in the puzzle. Each woman faces her own trials and sacrifices as she contributes her small part towards the attempt to protect King Henry and his wife, Elizabeth of York.

Because if they fail, England will once again be thrust into civil war between the Yorks and Lancasters.

Occasionally some of my readers ask me questions about my Craig Ramsey series. Without fail, the questions usually turn to Emily (Craig Ramsey's fiesty spirit companion). One reader described her attitude to Craig as "possessive"; I laughed at possibly unintended pun.

So I asked the folks on my Facebook Page to put their questions together.

Here are the most common questions (so far).

How long did it to take to write Dead Cell?
Some time after I released my Twelve Strokes of Midnight, I sat and wrote MOST of the headline for an adventure thriller. I think I started the first chapter in April 2016. The final draft I finished in late October 2016.

Where did you get the idea for Dead Cell?
One morning, on the way to my office, I passed a slow motorist on the Ipswich Motorway. He was travelling at least 20kph under the limit so annoyed a lot of others. This ignorant creature remained oblivious to everyone else on the road. Then I saw him laugh, one hand holding a mobile to his ear. Some believe they’re safer by slowing down to talk.
Not always.
So as I passed this dork, I fantasised about killing him. How would I do it? A gun? No, too clunky if I shot him while driving past him. An electromagnetic pulse to disable his pacemaker? Hmmm.
I wouldn’t want to be caught. Killing him and any other other driver selfish enough not to leave their phone off would need subtle but obvious message... make it look accidental.
Then I thought of the perfect assassin who could do it. A killer that obsessed would need skill and intelligence.
By the time I reached the office, I had everything in the assassin’s characteristics planned.
I had to write about it.

Emily F

In your book Dead Cell you shared that Craig’s lovely Scottish spirit companion Emily had children in a previous life that died young. I really like Emily’s character. Are you planning to write more about her previous life and her connection to Craig? I would love to hear more about the cheeky Emily.

Yes, I love Emily too. What a woman! (The picture attached is one of the closest pictures I've found to illustrate her ... although I originally based her personality around Karen Gillan's character Amy Pond from Doctor Who)

More of Emily’s past life (well, one of them) will come to light. I’ve been toying with a short story to illustrate how your favourite spirit companion met Craig Ramsey.

In Dead Cell, Craig tells how he remembers his first meeting with Emily when he was in high school. But that’s not how it really happened.

There was that one time not long after his parents died when he was 18 months old. He doesn’t remember it... yet.

But that’s only in his current life.

Emily’s life ended in Scotland’s Jacobite era. She knew Rob Roy, she said in Demon Blade. And yes, she had at least one child — and her best friend had a child too.... and spoilers.

Yes, Emily’s story will unfold as will her connection with Craig AND Brianna — and how they connect with each other. Readers will also remember a conversation between Turner and Emily that occurred in Demon Blade. The hint of a "great mission" dropped, and it involves Emily, Turner, Craig, Brianna, and a few others.
